The Critical Role of Human Resources in a Purpose-Driven Organization. 

Digital NEST and Eliad Group have partnered since 2017 to center co-creative and values-driven practices in Digital NEST’s technology-focused, workforce development programs for youth in marginalized communities. Recently, Ximena-Ireta Lopez ( Senior Manager for Human Resources at Digital NEST) and Aaron Eden (Co-Founder and Principal at Eliad Group) co-authored a paper on how important it is for the Human Resources function in a purpose-driven organization to closely examine its practices, and to make sure they reinforce and model the values and principles that are expected to permeate the rest of the organization. 

This is most important in the HR roles of job evaluation and norm enforcement, where it can be most difficult to be “human”.  Clearly the department must follow employment laws, and must manage exposure and risk for the company with relation to staff, but if in fulfilling those functions there is reliance  on the carrot-and-stick model of behavior and conflict management, it can undermine the values and efforts being used elsewhere in the organization.
