Digital NEST Receives Largest Gift from Latino Donor Chavez Family Foundation

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a 3-year grant to prepare youth in overlooked agricultural communities for technology careers

WATSONVILLE, Calif. – October 15, 2021 l Digital NEST (the NEST) has been awarded its largest contribution from a Latino donor to date. Funds from the Chavez Family Foundation (CFF) will help advance the NEST’s efforts in and beyond the Watsonville and Salinas area.

CFF leaders have been active supporters of Digital NEST in the past: sponsoring NEST Flight, a career development youth conference, and both mentoring and hiring NEST talent. For example, founding members Martin Vargas-Vega and Alex Chavez-Guerrero (no relation) left the NEST to work with CFF president, Tom Chavez through his associated tech ventures such as Habu and super{set}.

At CFF, we work with nonprofit leaders who are not yet well-known in the philanthropy world but who have a vision worth betting on,” said Chavez. “For that reason, we were privileged to become early supporters of Jacob Martinez and Digital NEST. Over the years, Digital NEST has delivered on its vision with results that have transformed lives. Leveling up our investment in this work is a no-brainer,” said the foundation in a statement.

When asked about the significance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Chavez remarked, “Every Latino has their own story and journey. Despite our differences, we share a certain worldview that hinges on a commitment to family and faith […] My parents’ interpretation of how we show up for family was inclusive of the ways they believed we have to show up for the broader Latino family. I’m privileged to be in a position where I can help empower people like Jacob to do the hard work of creating onramps and tools for more Latinos to pursue their own American Dream.”

Digital NEST will use the funds to serve more youth, particularly young people of color, by expanding to other rural areas of Northern California. As the NEST prepares to mark its seventh anniversary this November, we acknowledge the significance of CFF’s incredible support and celebrate the contributions of accomplished Hispanic leaders in our community.
