When I started Digital NEST in 2014, I could never have imagined the incredible transformation we’d create. What began with 371 youth in a single center has blossomed into a movement that’s rewriting opportunity pathways for Latinx and all underserved young people across the Central Coast.
Our story isn’t just about technology or job training—it’s about human potential. Every day, I witness the remarkable resilience of our young members who are breaking generational cycles of economic uncertainty. When we received 550 applications for just 57 internship positions this year, I was overwhelmed not by the numbers, but by the dreams behind each application.
The tech industry has long struggled with representation, with Latinx workers making up less than 2% of executive roles in Silicon Valley. At Digital NEST, we’re creating a different narrative. Our members aren’t statistics—they’re future innovators, leaders, and change-makers who reflect the true diversity of our communities.
Our bizzNEST internship program is more than a job placement initiative. It’s a launchpad for economic justice. By providing hands-on tech experience and paying above minimum wage, we’ve injected over $1 million directly into our local economies. More importantly, we’re giving young people the confidence to see themselves as tech professionals, not just workers.
The data tells a powerful story. Among our recent interns, we’ve seen remarkable growth in professional confidence. Young people are learning to network, prepare competitive job applications, and envision career paths that were once unimaginable. What excites me most is the transformation I see in their eyes—the moment they realize their potential is limitless.
We’re intentional about our approach. With 84% of our team living in NEST communities, we’re not outsiders coming in to help. We’re neighbors, family members, and community leaders investing directly in our own future. When a young person becomes a NEST member, they don’t just join a program—they become part of a supportive network committed to their success.
The challenges are significant. Nearly half of Central Coast families struggle financially, and Latinx workers face disproportionate economic barriers. Where others see obstacles, we see opportunities. Our commitment is unwavering: to create environments where every young person can discover their potential, develop critical skills, and launch meaningful tech careers.
As we look to the future, I’m filled with excitement. We’re cultivating the next generation of innovative leaders who will reshape industries and communities. Each young person who walks through our doors carries the promise of transformation, not just for themselves, but for their families and entire communities.
