Digital NEST members in the Web Design Institute recently launched websites for businesses and non-profits in and around Watsonville.
Happy July! We’re now in the heart of our summer programs. NEST members are putting the finishing touches on their maps of local ecology and communities, while the all-girl tech blog, Athena, is getting ready to go online. School’s out for the summer—but for Digital NEST members, innovation is in.
It’s been a milestone month for us! We’ve placed our first member in a job requiring skills he developed entirely at the NEST, UCSC’s Surf Club took 14 NEST girl members out surfing, and Second Harvest provides regular options of fresh fruits, vegetables, and snacks to members.
We were invited to the White House to speak on the need for tech education in our rural communities. Our members took awards in a videography competition, Team NEST represented in the Human Race, and our day of photography and music is this weekend.
This past month, we focused our workshops on the fundamentals for professionalism, Team NEST won Rookie of the Year in the Human Race fundraiser, and, Digital NEST hosted Santa Cruz County’s first Agriculture Technology Meetup, to standing room only.
March marks the start of Spring, so in honor of the season (Winter seems to be more honorary than actual this year anyway), Digital NEST is getting active. This month we’re getting ready to run in the Human Race and hosting career skills-building workshops.
It’s been a busy month at the NEST. We’ve been getting out into the community and the community’s been calling out to us. Some members are utilizing the NEST to develop professional films, while others represented us at Hack UCSC.
Happy New Year! We’ve been busy this past year at Digital NEST—and very likely that “we” has included you! If so, thank you. If not, this year ahead offers ample opportunities to get involved and make a difference at the NEST.
What an amazing year 2014 has been. A year ago today, I was preparing to say farewell to 2013 and was so unsure of what the new year would have in store for me. A year later I find myself sitting in the Digital NEST surrounded by talented and ambitious youth while writing to thank all of you who have made this possible.
